Route through the heart of Les Gavarres of Cassà
DOWNLOAD THE ROUTE
To get there, the route first passes through Can Vilallonga, where if there is time you can discover the rich water works formed by several canals and aqueducts. Once in the heart of the Gavarres, the route traverses lush forests of cork, holm oak, pines and other oak varieties, and follows several streams and torrents. From Coll de Lumeneres, the pass which separates the Gironès from the Baix Empordà, you will head in the direction of Sant Cebrià de Lledó and then descend, amongst thickets of heather and shrubbery, to Can Cantallops, an abandoned farmhouse that offers impressive views of the entire Selva plateau and the mountains that surround it.
Further down, on top of a hill that overlooks this plain, we can visit the remains of the Iberian town of Puig del Castell. This settlement, excavated in the 1960s and again in 2001 and 2010, is some of the oldest evidence of human settlement in the town.
Finally, we will return through the district of Verneda and pass through the Capçana or Verneda lock, where you can rest for a moment in the cool breeze before heading back to town and having a drink in the bars around the station. A tough route but one that will satisfy the most intrepid, ideal for mountain biking.
