Can Vilallonga
In the heart of the Natural Area of the Gavarres, at the foot of the massif and within the municipality of Cassà, is the Can Vilallonga estate. This publicly owned estate is made up of a large medieval farmhouse and the lands and woods that were once part of it. It is set in a superb location, a landscape made up of a mosaic of cork forests and crop fields. The farm is crossed by the Vilallonga creek, whose water has been used since the modern era for the agricultural uses of the farm. Thus, in Can Vilallonga you can see a large water works that includes an old mill, several locks and ponds and three aqueducts that transported water from the stream to the farmhouse.
Can Vilallonga is currently managed by the Consortium of the Gavarres, a public group that manages the Natural Interest Area of the Gavarres. The farm is managed using sustainable agro-pastoral and forestry techniques with a special emphasis on the prevention of forest fires. In addition, activities are carried out throughout the year, highlighted by the cork peeling demonstrations, which can be seen during the summer. Can Vilallonga therefore offers a unique example of the rich cultural and natural heritage that has characterised these mountains, especially with regard to the world of cork, and constitutes a unique gateway to the Gavarres massif.
